Airbrush Tanning - Frequently Asked Questions
What is Airbrush Tanning?
The body is gently airbrushed
with a gentle spray mist, using a UV free sunless tanning solution. The active
ingredient in the solution is a colorless sugar, which has been FDA approved
for more than 30 years, which naturally darkens the skin. This special formula
works by interacting with the natural amino acids in the dead surface cells
found in the outermost layer of the skin. This produces a color change, which
resembles a UV based tan. As the dead skin cells gradually wear off, the
color slowly fades, just like a genuine sun tan. This does not cause damage
to the underlying living layers of skin.

Is it safe?
The active ingredient
DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) has been approved for cosmetic applications for 30
years. Most Sunless and bronzing tanning lotions use DHA. People who have
DHA allergies should test their skin first before using.
See 'What about allergic reactions?'
below.

How long will my sunless tanning session take?
It takes about 20 to
30 minutes for the entire process to be completed. The first 10 minutes cover
application of the tanning solution to your skin. It takes approximately 5
to 10 more minutes for complete drying.

How should I prepare for my sunless tanning session?
Exfoliate your body,
and shower before your session. Make sure that there are no oils, lotions,
perfumes, or make up on your skin.

What should I do after my session?
Wear loose-fitting,
dark clothing, for at least 6 hours. Do not shower, work out, or do any activity
that causes sweating for the same period of time. This allows the solution
optimal time to react with the amino acids in the skin, encouraging a smooth
even tan.

How long will it last?
Your radiant tan typically
lasts 5 to 7 days. The immediate bronzer gives you an instant “off the beach”
tone. The color intensifies rapidly, virtually doubling in the first 30 minutes.
The intensity, essentially, doubles in the next four hours. Most of the bronzer
washes off with your first bath or shower. The beautiful, natural looking,
sunless tan, remains.

How often do I need to do it?
That’s up to you. Once
a week will give you color. Twice a week gets you quite dark. Some people
want to be very dark, and do it even more often.

Will I turn orange or streak?
No, you won’t. This
system is the most advanced sunless-tanning method on the market. Sunless
tanning has come a long way from those old days.

What about allergic reactions?
If you have hypersensitive
skin, or are allergic to sunless-tanning products, please proceed with caution.
You should check with your physician prior to using this or any other sunless
tanning product. We have had very few reports of reactions of any sorts, but
let’s play it safe.

What about my hair?
The solution is not
normally absorbed by scalp and body hair, nor does it usually cause discoloration.
Occasionally very pale, bleached, processed, very porous or grey hair can
absorb some tint. Your tanning technician will provide a protective hair cover
for vulnerable hair types.

What should I wear?
During your session
you can wear a bathing suit or under garments, while getting airbrushed. The
bronzer we use for your initial color is water-soluble and should easily wash
out of most fabrics. However, spandex, lycra, wool, nylon, and leather can
stain. Therefore, it is recommended you wear a dark colored, snug, older garment.
This will create “tan lines”. You can also wear shorts and a shirt, if you
prefer.

What does the tan look like?
The initial tan, which
you observe in seconds, is a deep, dark brown. It is often refereed to as
a “Jamaican” tan. The initial color is from the bronzer, and will wash off
with your first bath or shower. The final tan, which deepens, for up to 8
hours, is golden-brown color, often referred to as a "Baywatch"
tan.

Are there ways to enhance the results?
Using a high quality
moisturizer frequently after the tanning session will help prolong the tan.
You should not apply any moisturizers or lotions to the skin on the day of
your session. Certain types of moisturizers or lotions applied during this
period could cause streaking. Shimmer lotions, and cosmetic bronzers can all
be applied to enhance your radiant tan.

Can I tan in a UV tanning bed on the same day
I get airbrushed?
A number of people have
found that tanning with UV rays and the sunless tanning solution actually
provides a better overall tan. If you plan to do both, in the same day, we
recommend that you tan in the tanning bed first. Clean all lotion, or perspiration
from skin, before being airbrushed.

I usually break out in freckles when I try to
tan. Will the tanning solution make my freckles come out too?
There is nothing in
the tanning solution that will cause more freckles to break out. In fact,
in most cases, freckles and blemishes will become less pronounced because
the lighter skin areas will darken and reduce the color differentiation between
the blemishes and the rest of your skin.

How many times do I need to airbrush tan to achieve
the color I want?
You will be tan after
one session, but it may take several sessions to achieve your desired color
depth. Once you reach the color you desire, you should be able to maintain
it by tanning every three to four days.

How long do I have to wait after my session before
I can shower?
We recommend that you
wait at least 6 hours after tanning to give the solution enough time to fully
set. Allowing product to develop on skin overnight is ideal. If you shower
earlier, you may diminish the intensity of the tan. When you do shower, the
initial tan created by the water-soluble bronzer will wash off, but your long-lasting
sunless tan will remain.
